For quite a while I wanted to stay in the NHOW hotel in Milan.

As a fan of the famous South Tyrolean designer Matteo Thun I love to experience all parts of his extensive work. Thun’s office designed the Interior design, Light design, Facade design and Graphic design of the hotel. The site is located in Via Tortona, Tortona district, and used to be a GE factory and was rebuilt in the years 2004 to 2006 as a hotel. Previously, the Zona Tortona was a working-class neighborhood, now it is a trendy district. During Fashion and Design Week, the respective in-crowd hits the ground. But also apart from being a hot spot during the main events many showrooms of trendy designer or design companys such as e15 or Moooi are located here.

Before you arrive the hotel-entrance there is kind of a drive-through area which is painted in dark grey well-fitting to industrial chic. Once arrived you get welcomed by bright colored Armchairs called Proust and designed by Alessandro Mendini made from polyethylene (Manufacturer: Magis).

The next eye-catchers are the colorful, super-cool Acyrl Chandeliers made by the glass artist Jacopo Foggini which are showcased in the entrance. Everything is kept open and underscores Matteo Thun’s approach of “fluid design”.

But a hotel is not only design it also has to offer a proper hospitality. In short:

The breakfast: surprisingly great selection of fresh fruits, juices, cheese or cake, everything was there. Coffee is self-brewed out of a machine, but espresso can be ordered from la Signora.

Sleeping: bed nice, cushion sufficient, bedcover Italian-style thin (warm wool blanket an be ordered at housekeeping)

Reading in bed: lighting was good, hung a bit too high (Company: Flos)

Bathroom facilities: concrete, glass optics, lighting in mirror integrate (wet floor in the shower was a little slippery) (lighting: Flos)

Storage: a little impractical because of only few opportunities to hang clothes (ok for 1 person, but for 2 people? – see picture below)

Service: attentive, very friendly and welcoming –

Atmosphere: industrial chic combined with a colorful mix of modern design classics and the real relaxed environment made it an enjoyable stay.

What is your favorite hotel in Milan? Any recommendations? Would love to hear them!
