When I first talked to our house-painter about the colors\r\nI had choosen for the walls of our new apartment, \r\nour small conversation went like this:\r\nMe: I would like to choose this dark-violet for the dining \r\nroom. \r\nHouse-Painter: Are you sure. Do you really want this one?\r\nMe (still bit shy, because he is the expert and I assumed he\r\nhas some experience with color palettes): Yes. Do you \r\nthink the color will not perform like the sample? Shall we \r\ngo up or down on the color palette instead?\r\nHouse-Painter: You mean, I really should paint your \r\nwalls with this dark color? Are you sure?\r\nMe (know a bit more confident): Yes, I am.\r\nHouse-Painter (with heavy wrinkels coming to \r\nlive on his forehead): \r\nPuh. This color is really not nice. I usally prefer white \r\nor off-white walls instead. \r\nMe: (I admit I was a bit disappointed but did \r\nnot really care so much for his opinion....) \r\nWell, white walls are nice, depends...(I did not want to \r\nstart a deep discussion about the topic so tried to \r\nbe diplomatic somehow...)\r\nHouse-Painter: Ok, but I tell you, I do not have time\r\nto re-paint the walls, if you do not like it. \r\n\r\nPuh. I was really impressed about having such a strong \r\nidea about what is nice for your clients and what they\r\nshould do. \r\nAnd so I let him suffer while he painted the walls with this \r\nterribly horrifying dark violet which made him feel so bad. \r\nI could read it in his face. But, shame on me, because I did \r\nnot tell him what's the trick of decorating a room in dark \r\ncolors (walls, floor, furniture...). \r\nIt's quite simple. \r\nLift it up with a bright one, too. \r\nThat is the whole secret. \r\nFor example a dark grey goes very well with a cool pink, \r\neven a neon pink.
